Beyond the Classroom

Supplementary Courses & Modules

Curated short courses, workshops, and cultural activities to deepen your Arabic engagement.

Enriching the Core Experience

The Al Andaluse supplementary programme offers students the opportunity to explore Arabic language, Islamic culture, and Andalusian heritage beyond their core track. These modules are open to all enrolled students and many are also available on a standalone basis for short-stay visitors.

Available Modules

Arabic Calligraphy

A practical introduction to the art of Arabic script — from the Naskh hand used in manuscripts to the Thuluth style of monumental inscription. No prior artistic experience required. Weekly sessions of 90 minutes.

Qur'anic Recitation (Tajweed)

Correct pronunciation, rhythm, and the rules of Tajweed — taught by a qualified Qari with ijaza in the Hafs recitation. Open to all levels; beginners welcome.

Islamic Art History

A survey of visual culture in the Islamic world, with particular focus on the art and architecture of Al Andalus — the Alhambra, the Great Mosque of Córdoba, and the material culture of Umayyad Iberia.

Arabic Poetry Reading Circle

Weekly readings and discussion of classical and modern Arabic poetry — from the Mu'allaqat and the Andalusian muwashshah tradition through to contemporary Arab poets. Conducted in Arabic at intermediate/advanced level.

Hadith Reading Group

A structured reading of selected hadith collections with grammatical and contextual commentary — ideal for Classical Arabic students seeking additional text exposure.

Arabic Language and Culture Day Trips

Guided excursions to sites of linguistic and cultural significance — historical libraries, manuscript collections, and UNESCO World Heritage sites in the region with direct connections to the Arabic scholarly tradition.

Scheduling

Most supplementary modules run on Thursday afternoons and Friday mornings, minimising conflict with core programme hours. Full schedules are provided to enrolled students before each term begins.
